Cameron Highlands / Fraser's Hill

Cameron Highlands

Cameron Highlands

Cameron Highlands

Cameron Highlands is Malaysia's lagest and best-known hill resort. Discovered by, and named after William Cameron, a goverment surveyor who, in 1885 explored the area by hacking a path up through dense jungle and came across, "A fine plateau shut in by mountains". At 1524m above sea level the area enjoys a cool climate, with temperatures no higher than 20°C and rarely falling below 10°C, a welcome change to the generally oppressive heat and humisity at sea level.Cameron Highlands

Without doubt the most interesting aspect of a visit to the resort is its tea plantations, the first of which were established in 1929 by John Archibald Russell and belong to the most famous Malaysian tea producer, Boh Tea. The estates are wonderfully manicured and visitors are welcome to view the factory production process and enjoy a cuppa' at the tea shop. Other interesting places to visit include the numerous vegetable farms dotted all around the area. There are also strawberry farms, flower nurseries, butterfly farms, a challenging 18 hole golf course and for the more adventurious various jungle treks. The three main highlands towns are Ringlet, Tanah Rata and Brinchang with most visitors staying in and around the latter two. Accommodation varies from small inexpensive hotels and guest houses, to self-catering apartments and first class hotels. Any time of year is suitable for a visit, but try to avoid the main public and school holiday periods as the area can become very busy. It is also best to be prepared for the 2 hour journey from the entry point at Tapah to Tanah Rata, the drive is not steep and is extremely interesting, but the road is quite narrow and very winding, so drive carefully and try to stop occasionally to enjoy the various sights along the way. These include the impressive Lata Iskandar waterfall, amazing tropical vegetation and various Orang Asli (indigenous people) dwellings. Without doubt Cameron Highlands is the place to visit on Peninsular Malaysia.

Attractions

Each part of Cameron Highlands has its own individual charm and attractions, and together they combine to provide all the ingredients for a memorable holiday, no matter what your interest or what time of the year.

Fruits and vegetables like tomatos, cauliflowers, cabbages, oranges and strawberries grow fresh and healthy in the cool climate and fertile soils of the highlands. You can buy them either at the various markets or the farms which are located throughout the highlands.

Tea Plantations

ImageTea plantations is one of the must-see features of Cameron Highlands. You can visit the factories to see the process of tea production and some have shops where you can drink and buy tea. The view overlooking the plantations is beautiful, perfect for the picture album. The 3 most famous tea plantations are :

Boh Tea Plantations

ImageBOH Plantations Sdn Bhd is the leading tea grower in Malaysia with four tea gardens ? Boh, Sungei Palas and Fairlie situated in Cameron Highlands; and Bukit Cheeding in Selangor ? constituting a total land area of 1200 hectares. With a production capacity approaching 3000kgs per hectare, the Company produces 4 million kgs of tea annually which translates to about 5.5 million cups per day. This represents about 70% of all tea produced in Malaysia.

Sungai Palas Tea Estate

This is another tea plantation owned by Boh and it is located further up north from the mail plantation. A definite must on the list of things to do in Cameron Highlands is a visit to the new Sungei Palas Tea Centre. Recently opened by BOH Plantations at the Sungei Palas tea garden, it is just above Brinchang, in the very heart of the Cameron Highlands tea country.

Located on a hilltop, amidst rows of tea bushes and close to Gunung Brinchang, it offers the best possible introduction to Malaysian teas in a truly spectacular setting.

Click on the links below to read more about :

Bharat Tea Estate

Located along the main road from Ringlet to Tanah Rata this is a good spot where you can stop and enjoy a scenic view of a tea plantation.  There is ample parking here along the road andthere is also a small tea shoy where you can enjoy a cuppa. This is also a great spot for taking photos.

Flower Nurseries

ImageCameron Highlands is the leading producer of fresh flowers in Malaysia. Most of the flower nurseries are centered around Bertam Valley and all along the way from Brinchang to KgaRaja.

The common flowers grown here are roses, carnations, chrysanthemum, dalia, geranium, fuschia and gladioli. you can buy cheap flowers at these nurseries or any market around the highland.

Markets

ImageThe main tourist market is located around Kea Farm but you can also find many of them all along the main road from Ringlet to Kg.Raja.

On Saturday nights, the weekly night market comes to live in Brinchang. This is where you can find all the produce of Cameron Highlands being sold under the stars. You can get everything cheap here if you know how to bargain. This is also a place to get some good "pasar malam" food.

In the recent years, there have been "all-in-one" type of markets where you can find  small flower nursery, a strawberry garden, vegetable garden, souveniers and other Cameron Highlands produce all in one location.

Multicrops Central Market
You can get everything here from potted plants, frest flowers, cactus, strawberries, vegetables, tea and other Cameron Highlands produce.A small coffeshop and cartoon strawberry garden can also be found here.

Location : Along the main road if you are heading north from Brinchang. Just 1km from Brinchang town.

Strawberry Farms

ImageHere is a list of some of the strawberry farms in Cameron Highlands

  • Kasimani's Strawberry Farm
  • KHM Strawberry
  • EQ Strawberry Farm
  • Healthy Strawberry Farm
  • Raju's Hill Strawberry Farm

Image Big Red Strawberry Farm & Gift Center
Four acres of strawberries and lettuces which are all hydroponically grown. A good place to get the the best price for Cameron Highlands strawberries.

Location : Located in Brinchang town. Same location as Cactus Valley. From the main road, turn into road where Star Regency is located. Take a right at the junction and go in about 200 metres,

Image Kasimani's Strawberry Farm

Location : Located near the Cameron Highlands Golf Course. If you are driving on the main road from Tanah Rata to Tanah Rata to Brinchang, turn left right after you pass the golf course clubhouse.

Vegetable Farms E-mail

Image In recent years, due to the increasing tourist arrivals, there have been more smaller farms cropping up all over the highlands. These farms produce everything from flowers and vegetables to strawberries. These are primarily for walk in tourists. The other bigger farms who produce vegetables for the nation's consumptions are usually not on the tourist map.

Butterfly Gardens

ImageGet a change to see many different species of butterflies which used to be a common sight in the highlands many years ago. A walk through an enclosed area where each species of butterfly is happily floating around in a lush, plant-filled garden is the highlight.

There are two butterfly farms in Cameron Highlands and the are both located around the Kea Farm area.

Cameron Highlands Butterfly Farm
Various species of butterflies and live insects are on display here. Located in Kea Farm.

Cameron Highlands Butterfly Garden
Another butterfly garden which is located around the Kea Farm area. Various species of butterflies and live insects can be found here. It also has a small bonsai garden and souvenier shop.

ACTIVITIES

Mountain Hiking

ImageThe most popular mountains are Gunung Beremban, Gunung Brinchang and Gunung Jasar. For the more adventurous there are other less well-known mountains but a guide is recommended on these journeys.

Maps are available for the more common routes and you can find these at local shops or tour operators.

Gunung Beremban

Located in Tanah Rata, it can be reached via the Mardi Station, Brinchang (behind the Sam Poh Buddhist temple) or the golf course, past the Arcadia bungalow where the road stops (this is the easiest trail). It takes about 11/2 to 2 hours to reach the summit. It is also possible to climb Gunung Beremban from Robinson Falls.

Gunung Jasar

Also located in Tanah Rata, Gunung Jasar is a good track for beginners. The trail which starts next to the road to the weather station will take you 11/2 hours to reach the peak. Another trail which leads to the peak is located near the Oly Apartments in Tanah Rata.

Gunung Brinchang

Gunung Brinchang, is the highest peak in Malaysia accessible by road. The trail which starts from Sungai Palas will take about 11/2 hours to reach the summit. The view from the summit offers a great panorama of the plateau, although it spends most of its life shrouded in cloud. The road up the mountain starts near the Sungai Palas tea estate.

Jungle Treking Tips

Generally most jungle treks in Cameron Highlands are pretty safe. Although most are not clearly marked, the trails are wide and clear enough for you to get through easily. During the rainy season, the trails can get very muddy and slippery.
Get a map from your hotel or from the shops in town if you are planning to trek on your own. Get a guide if you want to explore the trails which are not in the map.

Here are a few basic tips to follow before you head into the rainforest.
? When choosing a trail, be sure that you have enough time to complete the entire route before darkness falls. Check with your hotel on the estimated time and difficulty level.
? Always inform your hotel on your destination and plans especially your estimated return time.
? Take plenty of water and pack a few easy to eat snacks to keep energy level up.
? Do not eat fruits you find in the jungle or drink water from the streams unless you are with a guide who says its ok.
? The weather here can unpredictable here so be prepared for sudden rain showers. You can buy the disposable raincoats for about RM5 at any mini market in town.
? Wear suitable and comfortable clothing.  A good pair of shoes is mandatory as the treks can get muddy and slippery. Shorts are ok but long pants are recommended to provide protection from thorny plants.
? Lastly, use good judgment and common sense.

Camping

Image
Sungai Pauh Campsite
Camping is more popular with the youth groups or university students who would hike up and spend the night on the lesser known mountains along the main range. These trips are not for the weak.

If you find that too difficult, why not just pitch a tent at the Sg Pauh campsite which is located near the Forestry Department. The campsite has got all the basic amenities like washrooms and running water. It is located near Taman Sedia and just a 5 minute drive to Tanah Rata or Brinchang.

For more information about the campsite and facilities available, please contact the Forestry Department at 05-4911384.

You will have to get the approval from the forestry department and you will also need a guide who is familiar with the area if you are planning to camping out in the forest.

Golf

Image There's only one gold course in Cameron Highlands and it is located between Tanah Rata and Brinchang.

The 18-hole Cameron Highlands Golf Course is quite challenging with its tricky greens and terrain.

Delight In The Cool Comfort Of A Hilltop Retreat
Fraser's Hill derives its name from one of the more colourful characters in Colonial history, James Louis Fraser, an adventurer and fortune hunter. Stories about his life, included rumours that he managed an opium and gambling den that was frequented by miners. However, in the early 1900's, J.L. Fraser vanished, never to be heard from again. Later, in 1917, a couple of clergymen rediscovered Fraser's Hill on one of their wanderings. Realising its potential as a Colonial hill station, they managed to garner enough support from the authorities to built a road linking the Kuala

Fraser's Hill

Tioman Island (Pulau Tioman)

Tioman Island (Pulau Tioman)

Tioman Island (Pulau Tioman)
A Tropical Paradise in the South China Sea
About 36 nautical miles off Malaysia's east coast lies Pulau Tioman or Tioman Island, one of the region's most enchanting holiday spots. Scenic and tranquil, Tioman Island boasts miles and miles of white sandy beaches, swaying palm trees, charming villages and friendly people. Its crystal clear waters teem with spectacular marine life and colourful coral gardens. The twin peaks of Gunung Nenek Semukut provide a prominent landmark to this island, reputed to be one of the most beautiful and idyllic in the world.

The Resting Place of a Beautiful Dragon Princess

According to legend, Tioman Island is the resting place of a beautiful dragon princess, Whilst flying from China to visit her prince in Singapore, this beautiful maiden stopped to seek solace in the crystal-clear waters of the South China Sea. Enraptured by the charms of the place, she decided to discontinue her journey. By taking the form of an island, she pledged to offer shelter and comfort to passing travellers.

Tioman Island (Pulau Tioman)

Tropical Playground for Water Sports Enthusiasts
Tioman Island is an excellent spot for fun-filled water sports activities. You can go scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, snorkelling, boating, water skiing, windsurfing, or enjoy the beauty of undersea gardens by ridding around the island in a glass-bottomed boat.

A Marine Treasure Trove
Tioman Island is a treasure trove of breathtaking marine attractions. Corals, seashells and limpets, thorny sea urchins, colourful seaweeds and anemones, starfish and a myriad of other aquatic wonders are abundant here. The crystal clear waters make scuba diving and snorkelling in Tioman an experience unlike any other. Other neighbouring islands recommended for scuba diving and snorkelling are Chebeh, Tulai, Renggis, Sembilang, Seri Buat and Gut.

Exciting Adventures Amidst The Splendour Of Nature
Tioman Island is the ideal spot for nature lovers, Whether at sea or on land, the wonders of nature that greet you are truly astounding and fascinating. Trek across the verdant hill from Tekek to Juara and enjoy the cool waterfalls cascading over moss-coverad rock formations at Mukut, or take a dip in the warm waters dotted with pastel-coloured reefs. Or head to the Marine Park Centre located between Tekek and Air Batang and swim amidst the various species of fishes.

Anglers' Bountiful Paradise
Fishing enthusiasts can enjoy a bountiful catch at Tioman Island, Just hire a boat for a day, anchor outside the Marine Park limits where fishing is permitted. By dusk, you will have a catch large enough for a sumptuous barbecue on the beach. If you want to try something different and challenging, try your hand at deep-sea fishing. Among the species if fishes and crustaceans found here are groupers, morays, tunas, parrotfish, sea-bass, red snappers, stingrays, plaices, soles, cora trouts, blue marlins, squids, cuttlefish, shrimps, crabs, prawns and lobsters.

Tioman Island (Pulau Tioman)

A Delightful Respite from the Hustle and Bustle of City Life
When the stress of life's hectic pace gets to you, rejuvenate your mind and body at Tioman Island. Immerse yourself in the quiet and tranquil setting. Relax to the cool, refreshing breeze and soothing waves. Bask in the tropical sun or walk along the shores during sunset to experience the beauty of the island. Popular beaches are found around the villages of Tekek, Genting, Salang, Air Batang and Juara. For golf-lovers, tee off at the 18-hole international-standard golf course set amidst lush tropical greenery. Enjoy the picturesque sight of rustic villages scattered around the island, where the people are charming, friendly and gracious.

Tioman Island is accessible by boat from Mersing town or Tanjung Gemok, Rompin, a journey which takes about 1 to 2 hours. Or one can also take a plane either Kuala Lumpur, Singapore or Kuantan. Accommodation comes in the form of delightful wooden chalets on the beach or in luxurious hotel rooms. Whichever is the choice, comfort and hospitality is assured.

Taman Negara

Taman Negara

Taman Negara

Mother Nature's Treasure Trove
Spread out over 4,343 sq. km. of the formidable Titiwangsa Mountain Range is Taman Negara - One of the world's oldest tropical rainforest. A sanctuary to hundreds of species of birds, butterflies, insects, fish and plants. Home to Malaysia's friendly aborigines, the Orang Asli. A shy yet gentle race, they continue to live the nomadic way they've lived for centuries although fully aware of the country's fast-paced progress.
Come discover the living treasures Mother Nature has to offer. Whether it's shooting thrilling rapids, exploring spectacular caves, tackling a 20-pound fish, scaling up Peninsular Malaysia's highest mountain, trekking through dense, tricky forest pathways or swimming in crystal clear pools, Malaysia's National Park is a natural paradise you must experience. An adventure of a lifetime awaits you here.

Taman Negara

A 130 Million Year Old Park

Taman Negara straddles the interior border regions of Kelantan, Pahang and Terengganu, boasting a continuous evolutionary history that spans 130 million years. Owing to a state legislation in 1925, about 1,300 sq. km. of tropical jungle in its natural state was designated the Gunung Tahan Game Reserve. In 1939, the three sultans of the above-mentioned states declared the area a national park. It was renamed King George V National Park. Following the nation's independence from the British in 1957, the park was officially given the name it goes by now.

Over the years, although Malaysia has promoted Taman Negara as a popular tourist destination, the goverment has taken careful steps to ensure the conservation of the park's flora and fauna. All developments or upgrading programmes to cater for tourists are carried out only after consultation with environmental experts

Kenyir Lake (Tasik Kenyir)
Kenyir Lake / Tasik Kenyir

Kenyir Lake (Tasik Kenyir)

Located approximately 55 km from Kuaia Terengganu, the Kenyir Lake is reputed to be one of the largest and most fascinating man-made lake in the world. Covering an area of 369 sq km, it is also Malaysia's largest rock-filled hydroelectric dam. When the area was inundated by water, most of the hills were above the water level, thus creating about 340 man-made islands. Surrounded by a lush tropical jungle, the Kenyir Lake is a popular and ideal retreat for nature lovers, anglers, photo enthusiasts and fun seekers.

Kenyir Lake / Tasik Kenyir

Some of the activities which could be carried out here are fishing, swimming, canoeing, boating and jungle trekking. Due to the cleanliness of the lake and abundance of food supply, the Kenyir Lake has a wide variety of fresh water fish such as Baung, Toman, Kelisa and Lampam. Accommodation such as houseboats, floating chalets and lakeside resorts are also available to visitors.
