Scuba Diving Vacation in Sabah, Malaysia Borneo

Sabah is fast gaining popularity as the latest premier Scuba Diving Vacation destination in the world. The exotic Malaysian state has some of the best dive spots in the region as well as worldwide. Besides the world-famous Sipadan, and its neighbouring islands like Mabul and Kapalai near Semporna in the East Coast of Sabah, the other top spots include Lankayan near Sandakan, and Layang Layang, situated some 300km off the West Coast of Sabah.

Scuba diving enthusiasts will surely love Sabah as there are a variety of activities to explore such as the following:

  • Diving in the centre of the richest Marine Habitat in the world
  • Diving at Jacques Cousteau' favourite tropical island dive spot
  • Cave Diving at the world's only mushroom-shaped top class dive hotspot
  • Muck Diving to catch the sight of the larger inhabitants of the reef
  • Wreck Diving for WW2 battle wreckages and hundred years old merchant ships?
  • Diving at a unique man-made Dive Atoll situated in South China Sea
  • Scuba Diving Vacation at Sipadan/Mabul/Kapalai

These three world-class dive destinations located within sight of each other are situated in the northeast of Borneo (or East Coast of Sabah). Sipadan, the most well known, is the legendary island of the turtles. Mabul is an enchanting island where every coconut tree has its own number. Kapalai is an island resort built on stilts in the middle of the sea. There are accommodations at both Mabul and Kapalai but since January 2005, the government of Sabah has banned overnight stay at Sipadan. However, dive packages offered by operators based on Mabul and Kapalai will normally include additional dives at Sipadan given the island's popularity and recognition as an award winning dive destination. There are several dive operators at both Mabul and Kapalai. The standard dive package will include 3 boat dive combinations a day with professional a Divemaster as well as unlimited beach dives (minimum 1 hour surface interval). Diving boat and basic diving equipments such as tanks with air, weight and weight belt will be inclusive.

     Mabul Island Divesite Map

Getting There: If you are in Kota Kinabalu, best to travel by air to Tawau (save precious time that can be spent at your scuba diving vacation). From there, transfer by land to Semporna (~1.5 hr drive). On arrival at Semporna, transfer by speed boat to the islands (~1 hr).

    Scuba Diving Vacation at Lankayan

Lankayan is regarded as the new diving frontier in the Sulu Sea off the North-Eastern coast of Sabah. A jewel-like tiny island in the Sulu Sea and hour and a half boat ride's north of Sandakan, Lankayan has been declared part of an immense Marine Protected Area. Its dive sites are all within minutes away from one another and boast unbelievably colorful macro fauna, fascinating wrecks such as the "Lankayan Wreck", which was an ocean going fish poaching vessel appropriately demised in the area of its illegal activities. Lankayan is a virtually uninhabited island but there is one small resort that offers an accommodation (chalets and deluxe apartment rooms for 40-50 guests) service.

Getting There: From Kota Kinabalu, take a flight to Sandakan (~45 minutes). On arrival, proceed to the Sandakan jetty downtown, and from there transfer by speed boat to the island (~1.5 hr). Note that there is only one boat transfer to and from Lankayan each day, departing Sandakan jetty at 10.00 hrs.

Scuba Diving Vacation at Layang Layang

Known as the "Jewel of the Borneo Banks", Layang Layang is a small oceanic atoll 14 sq km in diameter jutting some 2000m from the Ocean depths, making it a wall diving mecca. The exact location of Layang Layang is 7.5 degrees north of the equator and 114 degree east of the meridian, right in the middle of ancient South China Sea, 300km North West off the coast of Sabah. Besides its amazing dive features, Layang Layang is also renowned as a bird sanctuary, situated on the other end of the island. As for accommodation, there is only one resort on the island. The Layang Layang Island Resort is a modest three-star resort with 76 rooms and 10 suites. Its tropical hardwood structures and the likeness of a traditional Longhouse exudes an unparalleled sense of hospitality and warmth.

Getting There: Regular flights are operated by a private airline from Kota Kinabalu Terminal 2 Airport to Layang Layang. Currently, flight are scheduled (but subject to confirmation) on every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday (two flights per day). Flights will land at a 1000m runway on the Island.

    Scuba Diving Vacation Packages

Scuba diving vacation packages are usually conducted by diving companies (or operators), who will also normally run their own resort/lodge at the island(s). Each company offers their own dive/island packages based on accommodation at their resort/lodge. These packages can be quite similar but differ in cost based on the facilities and quality of accommodations and services provided, as well as in some cases, how established the operator is. Non-diver rates will be slightly lower.

    Scuba Diving Vacation Standard Conditions

  • All divers must show proof of diver certification for each level and specialty before diving is allowed.
  • All divers and snokellers will be required to sign a waiver form.
  • Flying after diving (last day at resort) -- The latest recommendation from DAN, Training Agencies, etc. indicates that you should wait a minimum of 12 hours and sometimes up to 24 hours after diving before you fly. However, SMART recognises that people, agencies and even computers and tables differ on this. If you choose to dive on the day you leave and fly, you will be required to sign a seperate Liability/Release Form (Waiver) to do this. You will only be able to do one morning dive; however, this is at the discretion of the Resort Management.

DIVING ON FIRST DAY AT RESORT - ORIENTATION

The first dive at the Dive Resort on the day of arrival will be an orientation dive with a Divemaster.  This is required of all divers.  Please take note that there is NO Underwater Camera or Video allowed during the orientation dive.  Other beach dives can be done on the first day under our UNLIMITED BEACH DIVING program.  First day diving is depends on your arrival time to the resort.

    DIVING SCHEDULES AND REGULATIONS

    * Boat Dives

There are three (3) boat dives a day, two in the morning and one in the afternoon.  It is a combination of Sipadan, Mabul and Kapalai dives making a total of 3 dives per day.  Each boat goes out with a boatman and Divemaster.  All dive sites and dive schedules will be arranged at the discretion of the resort Management.

The number of dive is limited to avoid overcrowding; therefore, visits must be arranged well in advance.  Divers on their first visit to Sipadan are briefed before they take the plunge.

Our dive boats will depart to the dive sites every morning at 8.00 to 9.00 am and return to Sipadan-Mabul Resort after the 3rd dive, around 4.00 p.m.  Divers will return to the resort for their meals after every dive.

    * Additional Day Dives

In order to cover the entire dive sites it is recommended at least one week stay at the resort.  If you would like to do additional day diving besides the normal 3 boat dives then the diving rate is RM 80.00 per dive/per diver.  This must be arranged in advance with the dive master.  You will be required to sign a separate Liability/Release Form (Waiver).

    *Unlimited Jetty Dives

Besides the three (3) boat dives, unlimited jetty dives may be carried out daily on Mabul’s House Reef.

These jetty dives can only start after your morning boat dive, unless you choose not to go on the morning boat dive; then you may dive anytime after 7.00am.  Your last jetty dive has to be planned in such a way as to exit the water by 10.00 p.m.

(See also Night Diving section below)

For jetty dive, you are required to dive with a buddy and sign out with our personnel on duty.  NO DIVEMASTERS WILL ACCOMPANY JETTY DIVES, unless prior arrangements are made.

To Pay & Dive on the Spot

For certified divers who purchase non-diver package wishes to pay and dive on the spot the additional charge

is RM 120.00 per dive includes the use of dive boat, tank with air, weights, weight belt and the services of divemaster on sharing basis.  This must be arranged in advance.

    *Buddy System and Depth Limitations

As per most Training Agency's teachings, all dives must be with a buddy; no solo diving is allowed.  Depth on any dive shall be limited to a maximum of 130 feet (40 meters), of course taking into account any residual nitrogen time already acquired.

    *Surface Intervals

For safety measures, a mandatory minimum 60 minutes surface interval is required before the next consecutive dive, regardless of whether you are diving by a computer or by tables.

    *Night Diving

To Night Dive, divers must show proof of night diving in the form of certification cards or logbooks documenting such dives.   If no proof is available, divers who wish to night dive will be required to take an introduction OR certification course in night diving at an additional cost.  Night Divers must exit the water by 10.00 p.m. (2200 hrs).

Night dive is exceptionally good at Mabul walls where one could easily encounter Lobsters, Crocodile Fish and occasionally large Cuttlefish.  The boat leaves for Mabul night dive at around 6.00 - 6.30 p.m. and dinner will be served after the dive.

Night dives can be scheduled whenever a diver wants to do one the following evening at extra charge.  A diver doing their first night diving will be required to do an introduction to night diving prior to the dive.

Rates for night diving with boat on Mabul Island is RM 150.00 per dive/per boat from 1-3 Divers and if there are 4 divers and above the rate is RM 50.00 per diver/per dive.  This will be charged locally.

THE ISLANDS: SIPADAN, MABUL & KAPALAI

SIPADAN is the small island where you can dive and snorkel.  It is a 15-30 minutes boat ride south of Mabul.  Sipadan is the tip of a mountain with steep underwater walls all around it.  These walls drop to 300m on the Mabul side of the island and 600m on south side.

Diving on Sipadan is all drift diving, divers drop in and cruise with the current along the walls.  This combination of deep walls and ocean currents provides the ideal environment for pelagic such as sharks and large schools of jacks and barracuda.

    SPECIAL RULES FOR PROTECTING TURTLES:

    * Divers and snorkelers are to refrain from touching, teasing and restraining turtles under water because

turtles are air breathers and can be drowned if panicked or cornered.  Anyone riding or restraining

turtles will sit out the next dive.

Note:      The time restricted by the Government for Diving at Sipadan Island is from 6am to 6pm.

MABUL in contrast to Sipadan is a continuation of the Borneo landmass rather than the top of an underwater mountain.  Because of this, Mabul has more gradually sloping walls around it that bottom out at about 30m.  The attractions on Mabul are of the smaller variety such as lobster, crocodile fish, moray and garden eels.  This makes it an ideal location for macro-photo opportunities.

If you walk around the east of the island at night, be sure to take a flashlight and watch for sea snakes on the beach or amongst the palm trees.

KAPALAI lies to the east of Mabul about 10 minutes away.  It used to be a vegetated island much like Mabul but erosion has turned it into a small sandbar that just breaks the surface of the water.  This is an area that we are exploring for new dive sites.  Like Mabul it is an excellent location for macro-photography and is specially abundant in the rare finds of diving such as mandarin fish, stonefish, leaf fish, pipefish, lionfish, frogfish, cuttlefish, eels, and more.

FLYING AFTER DIVING (LAST DAY AT RESORT)

The latest recommendation from DAN, Training Agencies etc., indicates that you should wait a minimum of 12 hours and sometimes up to 24 hours after diving before you fly.  However, SMART recognizes that people, agencies, and even computers and tables differ on this.  If you choose to dive on the day you leave and fly, you will be required to sign a separate Liability/Release Form (Waiver) to do this.  You will only be able to do one morning dive at 8.00am at Mabul Island; however, this is at the discretion of the resort Management.  The extra charge for the dive on last day is RM 80.00 per person/per dive.

    FINAL DISCRETION

SMART reserves final discretion on who may or may not do any type of diving we offer, based on a diver's shown abilities, experience, etc.  If a diver is or becomes physically incapacitated by injuries, illness, intoxication, 'hangovers', etc., we reserve the right to stop this person from diving.

(All prices quoted above are subject to changes)

In addition, we are willing to offer the tour leader of bona fide group, club or dive store trips a FOC trip to Sipadan-Mabul Resort (ex-Tawau) for every 10 paying guests. Example: 10 full paying guests, 1 tour leader FOC; 20 full paying guests, 2 tour leaders FOC, etc. Please take note this is not to be used by grouping pax together to form a group, as these tour leaders will be responsible for all liaisons between said group's problems outside of where SMART's responsibilities lie. The name(s) of the tour leader must be advised to us before arrival in Sabah

The following discounts and conditions apply to all NON-DIVING children:-

    1. Infants up to 3 years old are Free of Charge except for the airlines charges. The infant must stay in the same chalet as the parents; a baby cot will be provided free of charge if prior arrangement is made.

Our resort has been allocated 14 quotas each day out of the 120 pax. Due to this limited quotas our sales office in Kota Kinabalu under Explore Asia Tours Sdn .Bhd will arrange all divers to dive at Sipadan Island on rotation basis. Please note, there Is NO FIRST-COME-FIRST-SERVE BASIS.

We will not held responsible for not being able to provide diving at Sipadan due to the conservation measures by the Government.

The fee for Entry Permit to Sipadan Island is RM 40.00 per person per day for divers, non-divers, visitors and children. This entry permit has to be paid on the spot, in the resort if the approval is obtained. Please take note that the permit to Sipadan Island is NOT GUARANTEED.

However, if the entry permit to Sipadan Island is not approved, we can offer alternative snorkeling / diving at nearby island such as Si Amil, Mataking, Ligitan, Kapalai or Mabul where there is no restriction to dive on this island.

Mabul is totally different environment from Sipadan. It is mainly on muck diving where it is known for the exotic small marine life like frogfish, fire gobies, ghost pipe fish, shrimps, exotic sea urchins, crabs, nudibranch, sea horses and many more. The best month for diving is from April to July but not guaranteed. Water temperature range from 26~31 degrees Celsius. Thermoclines exist, especially on Sipadan. Visibility averages 15~30+ meters around Sipadan and is extremely variable, without warning it can drop to 3~6 meters. Around Mabul it is sometimes not more than 6~7 meters, especially if someone has kicked up the silt.

    HOW TO GET THERE

You will fly from Kota Kinabalu to Tawau (40 minutes) and then take a coach of about 90

minutes to a coastal fishing town of Semporna, from here you are ferried to Mabul Island in

    about 30-40 minutes.

    MABUL ISLAND

Situated only about 15 minutes by speedboat from Sipadan, and 30 minutes from

mainland Semporna, Mabul is recognized as one of the world's best "muck-diving" sites,

has a shallow reef profile with sandy bottom and patches of sea grass and also one

of the richest single destinations for exotic small marine life in the world.

The coral reefs at first glance do not look very picturesque and inviting,

however it is the diversity of macro animals inhabiting the coral rubble and sea grass sites

that put Mabul on the diving map. Flamboyant cuttlefish, blue-ringed

octopus, mimic octopus, gobies and frogfishes are everywhere, as are moray,

snake eels and practically the whole scorpion fish family. There's no doubt

about it, Mabul is a magical macro site! The beauty of Mabul will also appeal

greatly to non - divers as well. There are about 8 dive sites in Mabul area such as: -

    * Eel Garden (18 - 20 m)

    * Ray Point (15 - 25 m)

    * Panglima Reef (5 - 20 m)

    * Lobster Wall (40 - 75 m)

    * Nudibranch Centre

    * Crocodile Avenue (2 - 15 m)

    * Froggy Lair (5 - 20 m)

    * Coral Reef Garden (5 - 15 m)

Some of the dive sites' descriptions are...

    EEL GARDEN

~ Located towards the southern end of Pulau Mabul. Eel Garden is one of the

deeper dives around the area. Divers descend to a sandy flat between

20 to 25 metres sloping towards the open sea.~ Fining carefully and avoiding stirring up

the silty bottom, divers can observe gobies seeking refuge in the tiny

crevices and moray eels occupying larger holes. Looking towards the sandy patch,

you will see what appear to be blades of long grass swaying with the current. These are

the elusive garden eels (Heteroconger Hassi) living in colonies that quickly dart back into their

burrows on approaching shadows or excessive movement in the water.

    RAY POINT

~ Also located on the southern tip of Pulau Mabul, this site slopes to about 30 metres

at the sandy bottom. Currents sweeping through this point bring clear water and good visibility.

Sea fans and soft corals that thrive in current areas

are home to gobies, blennies, moray eels, butterfly fish, damselfish, parrotfish and stonefish

    (Synanceia Verrucosa).

    CROCODILE AVENUE

~ Mabul, Crocodile Avenue: Flat sandy area from 5m to 20m. It is a sandy area, so there

are empty stretches of sand with oases of life. Our dive guide found some seahorses there every time.

The absolute record was 8 seahorses. Then there are sand eels, double-ended pipefish, crocodile fish,

special tube anemones, ghost pipefish (Harlequin- and Sea grass-), cowfish etc.

I even saw some turtles, humpback parrotfish, barracudas, mackerels and a small eagle ray

there. Night dives are also very good here. We found lots of sepias, cuttlefish

and special nudibranchs (for example the Spanish Dancer, Asteronotus c.) and lots of crabs.

One of the highlights was a small boxer crab, found on some rubble.

    SEAVENTURE PLATFORM

~ Mabul, Seaventures Platform: Flat sandy area on about 17m. This is an

old oil platform that has been converted

into a hotel owned by Seaventures Dive Resort. It stands on huge pillars.

You dive underneath in 17m of water. An

amazing dive site! There are several piles of metal rods, look close, and

there are always several frogfish (yellow to

red, black and gray) sitting on them. Inside the largest pile there is a huge moray

eel. His head must have a diameter

of about 15cm! Then we also found: ghost pipefish (Harlequin and sea grass), wasp fish, nudibranchs (Halgerda,

Cromodoris etc.), stonefish, flying gurnard and close to the pillars always lots of  batfish and flute fish.

    LOBSTER WALL

~ Mabul, Lobster Wall: Wall, some small caverns. There are many nudibranchs, anemones,

     shrimps and in a small

cave I even found a baby cowfish. Great night dives.

    SIPADAN ISLAND

~ Sipadan Island has 11 Marked Dive Sites. All dives are Wall Dives. The following are

    brief descriptions of some

of the sites and marine life you can expect to see.

    DROP OFF

~ Just 20 feet from the shore, the wall plunges a staggering 2,000 feet down and is

rated as one of the top 5 Beach

Dives in the world. The wall is encrusted with different varieties of coral, turtles abound

    and a multitude of lionfish

& smaller reef dwelling fish live on this wall. The entrance to TURTLE CAVERN is also

    found about 70ft down

    along this wall.

    STAGHORN CREST / SOUTH POINT

~ There is usually a very strong current present at this site. Dives here can take

you through up to three marked sites.

Very large shoals of pelagic feed here (Barracuda, Jacks, Sharks and Turtles). On the

    upper reef, a multitude of

smaller reef fish abound. Coral is bursting with color, many huge Anemone and

    Clown Fish at this site.

    HANGING GARDEN

~ This wall is covered in a multitude of soft coral. Hawksbill & Green Turtles live

on the ledges at this site and the

current is usually quite calm. A great spot for photography as colorful corals hang

    from the interesting cracks and

    crevices along the wall.

    TURTLE PATCH

~ This site is home to a huge number of Hawksbill & Green Turtles. Many reef

sharks also frequent this site. It is

rather barren in comparison to some of the other sites, but triggerfish and other

reef fish dwell on the upper coral

reef, making it a well-rounded site.

    BARRACUDA POINT

~ As the name suggests, Barracuda Point is where a large concentration of

Pelagic's converge. Except to see large

shoals of Barracuda, Jacks, Grey and White Tip Reef Sharks. The schools

number in the high hundreds. Current is

strong. It is a fast moving, high voltage dive site.

    WHITE TIP AVENUE

~ As with al the sites on Sipadan Island, the name says it all. Expect to see

huge Black & White Tip Reef Sharks,

Grey Sharks, massive Green & Hawksbill Turtles as well as large shoals of Jack & Barracuda.

    KAPALAI ISLAND

    MANDARIN VALLEY

~ Kapalai, Mandarin Valley: Slope to about 20m. Hard corals, then sand. Small underwater mound.

This dive site has its name from a dragonet that can be found there and that has a beautiful

color like the clothes of the Chinese mandarins. It lives during the day under the spines of sea urchins.

Go out to the small underwater mound - there were several leaf fish there last time. Leaf fish can

shed their skin and in such a way adjust to the surrounding reef. I saw one, where some yellow ascidians

were growing on his skin right over the eye. There is also a mushroom coral

(Heliofungia a.) on the sand with some white anemone pipefish (Siokunichthys n.) living inside.

    RAY CHANNEL

~ Kapalai, Ray Channel: This is a sandy channel with the reef on one side. The special fish,

you find here and nowhere else in Mabul is the dragon fish (Pegasus). This small animal lives in pairs on

sand and feeds on invertebrates. There are some leaf fish; a spiny devilfish lives close by,

and there is a small baby-angelfish.

SIPADAN - KAPALAI DIVE RESORT ON KAPALAI ISLAND

SIPADAN-KAPALAI DIVE RESORT ON KAPALAI  ISLAND

Divers say " THE BEST OF THE TWO WORLDS diving in Sipadan and the macro paradise of Kapalai ".

A few minutes by boat from Sipadan but a full world away it lies the exhilarating

Sipadan-Kapalai Dive Resort, sitting on its sturdy stilts on the shallow sandbanks

of the Ligitan Reefs. Planned and built in full style as an airy, comfortable, sunny water

village with no land in sight, it boats a mile-long sandbank of powdery blindingly white sand

where one can suntan at complete leisure.

The resort offers great food, surprisingly roomy ad elegant twin-sharing wooden chalets

with huge private balconies and attached bathrooms and a couple of miles of walkways for

those who like to take their morning jog while looking at thousands of fish just a few inches

beneath their feet. Meals are served in the terraced, open central structure, while a big

western sundeck allows divers to have an evening drink or an after-dive chat with a

    background of fabulous tropical sunsets.

Diving around Kapalai is exceedingly easy and shallow but quiet spectacular:

the sandy bottom and the spare coral heads host an amazing array of

small, often yet-to-be-classified, shamelessly colorful subjects, making the

diving here and unforgettable experience for any discerning photographer.

The resort offers three dives a day plus, if requested, day trips at Sipadan.

The purest image of natural serenity, the sandbank of Kapalai and its exclusive resort-on-stilts lie on a patch of brilliant turquoise a few miles off the coast of Borneo, along the spectacular Ligitan Reefs and just a few minutes by speedboat from the celebrated (and more crowded) islands of Sipadan and Mabul.

Quiet shallow waters lap at the sturdily, kampung-style built wooden bungalows overlooking the sandy sea bottom, and from the windows of the elegant, spacious rooms one can spend endless hours looking at the sea life dancing its never ending tune just a couple of meters below.

Innovative in concept - a chain of roomy and well-equipped chalets with private bathrooms linked by long wooden walkways, centered around the open restaurant cum sundeck and the customary dive center - the Kapalai Dive Resort has been built on a shallow but surprisingly wide sandbank which had been long known (and dived) by underwater photographers from all over the world, who used to come all the way from Sipadan and Mabul in search of its wildly exotic resident fauna.

Swimming, creeping, crawling or just simply lying still on the surrounding sand bottoms, hiding among the branching colonies of the shallow surrounding coral reef, ambushing their unwary prey from the hideouts offered by the resort stills and a few artificial reefs dotting the bottom, an amazing number of rare and unbelievably colorful species play their game of life and death, offering to the discriminating visitor unsurpassed opportunities for observation and macro photography.

    Resort Facilities

This is the lair of the weird and Technicolor flamboyant cuttlefish, rumbling on the bottom like a miniature tank rippling with fluorescent waves of vermilion, purple, chocolate brown, bright yellow and blinding white, all the time waving and flourishing its paddle-shaped front tentacles like some samurai of yore, looking more like a sensuous orchid than a predatory cephalopod; it is the domain of the invisible frogfish-coming in Kapalai in all sorts of shapes, sizes and colors - which despite sometimes being as large as a melon will often escape even the most trained of wildlife spotters.

All dive spots are extremely close and can be reached in just a few minutes by speedboat (some of them, actually, just by swimming from the dive center pier); the diving in Kapalai is so easy and shallow that it can be considered ideal for the newcomers to the sport, being extremely satisfying at the same time for the very experienced.

The water boat brings in fresh water from the mainland every other day bringing in 6000 gallons of fresh water each trip.

This is the hydroponics treatment system which is under constructing.  It is converting the dirty sewerage water into clear water back to the sea or use this water for the toilet flush system.

In any case, those who are at last satiated with the tiny marvels of the macro life of Kapalai can, in just a few minutes more, dive at will both in Sipadan (where big fish and turtles abound) or at Mabul (whose solty and muddy bottoms offer different and equally pleasant opportunities to the lovers of "muck diving"). And those who just want to relax and rest between the dives may take advantage of the cleverly thought-out balconies of the bungalows, which offer the total privacy so much sought out by the lovers of sunbathing.

Warm Welcome of Kapalai Island's Sundeck

    SIPADAN WATER VILLAGE RESORT

Sipadan Water Village offers you the excitement of superb diving along with comfort and relaxation. The village, fringed by beautiful corals, pearl white sands and amazing marine beauty, is the epitome of class and luxury.

    Mabul
Sipadan Water Village is located on the island of Mabul. This small island surrounded by sandy beaches and perched on the northwest corner of a larger 200-hecter reef is notably known as one of the worlds best "muck-diving" sites. The reef is on the edge of a continental shelf and the seabed surrounding the reef slopes out to 75 to 100 feet deep. Mabul is arguably one of the riches single destinations for exotic small marine life anywhere in the world. Flamboyant cuttlefish, blue-ringed octopus, mimic octopus and bobtail squids are just a few of the numerous types of cephalapods found. The sight of harlequin shrimp feeding on sea stars and boxer crabs waving their tiny anemone pom-poms are just a small example of the endless species of crustaceans. The list seemingly endless, it would be easier to list the species not found at Mabul - crazy critters are in abundance at this magical macro site!
The macro life is equally mesmerizing; garden eels, leaf scorpion fish, mantis shrimps, fire gobies and various pipefish are guaranteed at various dive sites. Sipadan also boasts a rich variety of corals; both soft and hard, among these Dendronephyta in delicate pastel colors and feather stars of all shades and hues. The most popular dive spot to view these is the Coral Gardens.

The diversity of the abundance of marine life found at Sipadan gives it the reputation of being one of the best dive locations in the world.

    Sipadan
Sipadan Sipadan Water Village dive packages include diving at Sipadan. No other spot on the surface of this planet has more marine life than Sipadan. More than 3000 species of fish and hundreds of coral species have been classified in these riches of ecosystems. The resort is dubbed a "Water Village" because it is built entirely on pilings - connected to the shore by a long pier.

Sipadan is well known for its unusually large numbers of green and hawksbill turtles which gather there to mate and nest and it is not unusual for a diver to see more than 20 turtles on each dive. Another unique feature is the “Turtle Tomb”, and underwater limestone cave with a labyrinth of tunnels and chambers that contain many skeletal remains of turtles that became disoriented and then drowned.
Barracuda Point is where a diver may experience the thrill of swimming amidst schooling barracuda and big-eye trevally, which gather in thousands forming spectacular tornado-like formations. With the possibility of seeing pelagic such as mantas, eagle rays and hammerhead sharks, each dive at Sipadan is a highly anticipated event.

    Kapalai
Sipadan Water Village dive packages also include diving at Kapalai. This unique and new dive destination is built on a sand bar only 15 minutes from Sipadan Island. The sand bar was many years ago the island of Kapalai, but erosion has taken its toll on what was once a truly beautiful island. The village sits on what is known as the Ligitan Reefs, a very extensive stretch bordering the deep and vast Sulawesi Sea.

The underwater scene is completely different compared to Sipadan’s. It is a macroworld of great interest featuring rare subjects ranging from dragonets, fire gobies, partner & sleeper gobies, wasp or leaf fish, gurnards, the strange ‘little dragonfish’ or seamoth, the tame crocodile fish, giant frogfish of different colors, eels, rays…just to name a few.

The Dive Centre is responsible for all in-water activities and scuba training and education. The centre opens from 0700hrs onwards and is equipped with lockers, showers, toilet and a common area for resting between dives with complimentary snack, hot coffee and tea.

It carries 5 Bauer compressors for refilling tanks, over 300 aluminium 3000 psi / 80 cubic foot tanks with American style "K" valves, rental sets of scuba diving equipment that are mainly Scuba Pro.

The centre equipped with custom-built fibreglass dive boats that carry 12 passengers each. Each boat goes out 3 trips daily accompanied by a boatman and a Dive Master.

All Dive Masters are specially trained in the marine ecology of Mabul Island and will not only show divers the attractions but also impart their knowledge of the marine life so that guests may return from their memorable holiday with a better understanding of the environment.

This is what differentiated the Dive Masters at Sipadan Water Village from elsewhere: An attitude and passion for what Mabul has to offer.

Due to the fact that the marine life found around Mabul Island varies greatly from that of Sipadan Island, combination of the two islands for diving make a diver's diving holiday more complete.

Mabul and Kapalai is heaven for studying the micro aspects of marine life and guarantees hours of fascinating fish watching with ample opportunities for photography.

At world-renowned Sipadan Island, divers get different experience as one dive amongst the giants of sea and its only 20 minutes away from the comforts of Sipadan Water Village.

There are about 13 dive sites in Sipadan. On a good sea condition, it takes about 20 minutes from Mabul to Sipadan. Most of the diving in Sipadan is combination of wall and drift diving. The walls are covered with hard corals, soft corals, gorgonians, sponges etc.

You can see more turtles on one dive here than in a lifetime of diving anywhere else. Divers may also get to see huge resident school of barracudas, which make beautiful circling patterns on top of the reef, in 10 or 15 feet of water at the South Point.

    Housekeeping
Housekeeping service is conducted once daily. Towels are provided in the bathroom for guest personal use in their respective cottage.
